University Hospitals Bristol (UH Bristol) specialist teaching Trust runs nine hospitals across the campus, including:

-Bristol Royal Infirmary
-Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
-Bristol Heart Institute
-St Michael's Hospital
-Dental Hospital
-Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre
-Bristol Eye Hospital

The Trust has close links to Bristol University and the University of West England and provides acute medicine and surgery, critical care, trauma and orthopaedic and emergency medicine services to the population of the southern part of Bristol. It also provides the centre for cardio-thoracic services for the southwest region.

Foundation Year 1 and 2 Placements

The Foundation programme was introduced in 2005 as a stepping stone from medical school to speciality/GP training and consists of a coupled two-year programme. Some programmes consist of two years here at UH Bristol while others are "uncoupled" and consist of placements in two different Trusts.

Each foundation year (FY1 and FY2) is divided into three placements and provides you with a safe environment to practise what you have already learned at medical school, while developing the additional skills, knowledge and experience needed to begin speciality training.

UH Bristol Foundation Posts

You can also download the attached "Why UH Bristol?" leaflet which will give you a bit more information about working at the Trust and about Bristol as a city to live and work in. It also provides details of the 2016/17 Foundation Programme Rotations.

F1 Education Programme

Please email

The UH Bristol Foundation Programme Director, Dr Jim Portal and Associate Directors Dr Kieron Rooney and Mr Jamshed Shabbir, will ensure you have the necessary access to a formal taught programme of education which addresses the professional elements of the Curriculum.  The education programme currently runs every Wednesday from 12:30 - 13:30 and is managed by the team in the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Centre (opposite the main Bristol Royal Infirmary hospital). This is a one hour "protected time" teaching (we look after your bleeps!)
