About us

The University of Bristol Dental Hospital is a Centre of Excellence providing routine and specialist clinical dental services for the South West.

Emergency Dental Service for patients who already have a dentist

This service is provided to any patient, whether NHS or private, who requires out of hours dental treatment outside of their normal dentist's opening hours, or is just visiting the area. To access this service, patients must phone 111. Triage will determine the patient's need and an appointment will be given if appropriate. Referral is not needed by a dentist.

The cost of treatment for all services and clinics is the same as at any other NHS dental practice. Unless individuals are exempt from charges, for which proof is normally required, normal NHS charges apply.

Charges will be payable at the time of treatment and need to paid in full.

Emergency Dental Service for patients who do not have a regular dentist

Bristol Dental Hospital provides a walk in Emergency Dental Service for patients who may have difficulty accessing a regular dentist during regular opening hours.  The emergency service is run from the Primary Care Unit, which is situated on the ground floor of Bristol Dental Hospital and during the dental student vacations any patient's wishing to access this service will be assessed via a strict triage process by the qualified dental staff on duty.

The unit's main function is as a teaching platform for Dental Undergraduate Students providing emergency treatment for patients under supervision. The Students carry out supervised emergency care in the department which is available in the mornings only on Monday to Friday's on a first come basis after the doors open at 8.00am. Once the Student patient quota for each session is reached a strict triage system is used and only those patients who fulfil the criteria when presenting for emergency care of Trauma, Bleeding or Facial Swelling are able to be seen. The afternoon session remains as a triage only service, however all patients declined access are advised to seek further advice from NHS England by phoning 111.

Routine Dental referrals will not be seen on the emergency dental clinic; however emergency referrals will be assessed provided the department is made aware that the patient has been advised to attend as an emergency patient.

The service does attempt to see all patients accepted for emergency care within a timely manner but this is not always possible, some patients may have a longer wait to see somebody as those with severe oro- dental problems are given priority.

If patients are currently receiving treatment from a dentist we are unable to accept them for treatment unless the patient has an emergency referral letter from the dentist and they have contacted the department prior to their patient's attendance.

Emergency Dental Service for Children (aged 0-16 years)

The Department of Child Dental Health is a Specialist Unit and only provides emergency care for children with;

  • complex dental trauma
  • facial swelling associated with dental infection
  • uncontrolled bleeding following dental extractions or dental trauma

This service is provided between the hours of 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Emergencies of this nature outside of these hours should attend the Bristol Children's Hospital A&E department.

All children attending as an emergency will be triaged, and if not meeting the acceptance criteria above, will be asked to return to their own dentist or directed to phone 111 for out of hour's services.

For any other dental problems, children who are registered with their own dentist should contact their dentist in the first instance.

If outside of their normal dentists opening hours, they should phone 111 for information regarding out of hour's dental services in their area.

If the child is not registered with a dentist, the carer should phone 111 for advice regarding dentists who are accepting NHS patients for registration, and for information regarding out of hour's dental services, and access to the Primary Care Dental Service.
